This little pink bottle has a huge reputation to live up to. A cult product, Mario Badescu's infamous drying lotion is described as 'a fast acting, effective acne spot treatment. Formulated with salicylic acid, calamine and other quick drying ingredients, this product will shrink ugly whiteheads virtually overnight while you sleep.' At first glance it appears that the product has separated, but the liquid is meant to sit in two separate layers. The first two thirds of the bottle are a clear, yellow tinted liquid, and the bottom third is a pink sediment. The urge to shake the bottle to combine the ingredients is strong, but you must resist! To apply, simply dip a cotton bud into the liquid, making sure you reach the pink sediment. Then dab the cotton bud onto your blemish. It's recommended to apply on top of other skincare, not onto clean skin.
So, does it work? I personally think so. I applied the lotion to my horrible cystic pimples last night, and four out of five had flattened completely. I must warn you, it stings like nothing else when you apply it, but the sensation quickly fades. This is due to the combination of highly active ingredients including: salicylic acid (exfoliant), calamine (soothing and cooling), camphor (antiseptic and anti inflammatory), zinc oxide (antibacterial), titanium dioxide (uva and uvb protection) and talc (oil absorption). Despite being called 'drying lotion' it's far less drying that many other pimple treatments on the market. The combination of glycerin and calamine work to hydrate and sooth the blemish. I experienced no flaky skin or surface dehydration while using the lotion, which is pretty incredible for my sensitive dry skin type.
This is a must have product for your skincare arsenal. While it's not going to prevent pimples you from forming new pimples, it will eliminate them without drying out your skin. Drying lotion can be purchased from Mecca Maxima for $24, and the bottle will last you a very long time.
